Metz deep is the capital of the region of Lorraine in northeastern of France. On an area of just under 42 square kilometers, currently approximately 125,000 people live at the mouth between Seille and Moselle. Around 3000 BC, the first people settled in Metz. Under the name God Castle, a Celtic tribe founded the then place that was due to its strategic location to one of the most important cities in Gaul. In the second century, the population had grown to over 40,000 people, making greater than Lutetia, the today's Paris, Metz.
For many centuries Metz became a Christian stronghold with many churches and monasteries. Still, impressive examples from this period bear witness. One of the most interesting buildings of the city is the Cathedral of Saint-Étienne. The Gothic Cathedral, which was built between 1220 and 1520, is one of the most beautiful and gewaltigsten in all France. Some of the fascinating glass windows of the clerical building, which were however later incorporated, come from the master of colors and transparency, by Marc Chagall. Also the Romanesque church of Saint-Maximin from the 12 to 18 in the outre-Seille district is unique. Particularly noteworthy are the stained glass by Jean Cocteau, which was made around 1960.
In the seventeenth century Metz was finally converted into a fortress by the famous field marshal and engineer Vauban. Unchanged in the fortifications was however German gate, which integrated Porte des allemands, from the 13th century, which is still today can be seen in Metz. More evidence of German influence is found in the Imperial, a district of wilhelminisch, aud the early twentieth century.
