Modena is an old university town in the region of Emilia-Romagna in Northern Italy. With over 175,000 inhabitants in an area of approximately 182 square kilometres, it is also the capital of the province of Modena. Originally, the town was founded by the Etruscans, but experienced various rulers throughout its history with the Celts and Romans. As Modena almost had been destroyed in the 7th century by a flood, the city was rebuilt in its present layout from about 900.
Symbol of Modena is the fascinating Cathedral San Geminiano with the 88 M high, free standing bell tower Torre Ghirlandia.1099 was started with the construction of the Church, which combines Gothic and Romanesque styles in their marble facade, and only some 200 years later completed. Since 1997, the two buildings belong to the UNESCO World Heritage site. Historically, it goes on in close proximity with the Palazzo Comunale. The imposing building with its clock tower from the 12th century was completely rebuilt in the sixteenth century and now serves as City Hall of the municipality. The stone block in front of the House which was used also as a pillory testifies today grittier customs from the heyday of Modena.
Right through the heart of medieval Modena, it goes via Emilia. The ancient road, which in total is 262 km and at the time belonged to the most important traffic routes, and gave its name to the province, is also the most popular shopping street of the city. Besides shopping, there are as well a number of small bars and cosy restaurants.
