On the one hand as the capital of the Dominican Republic on the other hand as a cultural highlight of the island of Hispaniola, so the city of Santo Domingo presents itself. It is located on the South coast and is home to some quite remarkable buildings and cultural treasures from the colonial period.

Focus on a visit to Santo Domingo is the Alcázar de Colón. Built in the 16th century by Diego Colón, son of the famous Explorer Christopher Columbus, this glamorous Palace was used as a seat of Spanish Government. Today, an interesting Museum, which reflects the feudal life in Santo Domingos former Government space presents itself here.

Also very impressive, the Cathedral of Santa María of la menor at the plaza Colón rises. It looks like a fortress and was the first cathedral of the formerly newly discovered world. Some very valuable altars and the supposedly here found remains of Christopher Columbus of this Cathedral make it an exciting place of pilgrimage. The tomb of Columbus, was transferred to the Faro de colon and can be visited here.
